The Opening Session of the 55th Jornada Paulista de Radiologia was marked by the traditional – and moving – session of tributes for Honorary Members, Honorary President and Patron, given to renowned figures in the radiology community, in addition to the participation of the Secretary of Health of the State of São Paulo and a lecture on sustainability in radiology and the new generation of radiologists.
Dr. Nelson Caserta, SPR president, on behalf of the organization, declared the JPR 2025 open, in partnership with the Argentine Federation of Radiology (FAARDIT) and the Argentine Society of Radiology (SAR).
To open the ceremony, Dr. Caserta highlighted JPR is the result of great partnerships between people, companies and institutions in the area of Diagnostic Imaging; therefore, he expressed his gratitude to the representatives of the international partner institutions present:
- Argentine Federation of Radiology
- Argentine Society of Radiology
- Radiological Society of North America
- Colombian Radiology Association
- Costa Rican Association of Radiology and Medical Imaging
- Mexican Federation of Radiology and Imaging
- Chilean Society of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging
- European Society of Urogenital Radiology
- Uruguayan Society of Radiology and Imaging
- Spanish Society of Medical Radiology
- European Society of Radiology
- Brazilian College of Radiology
- Inter-American College of Radiology
- Peruvian Society of Radiology
- American Institute of Radiological Pathology
- French Society of Radiology
- Brazilian Society of Nuclear Medicine
- Brazilian Society of Neuroradiology
- Brazilian Society of Interventionism and Endovascular Surgery
- Brazilian Association of Medical Physics
- Brazilian Society of Ultrasonography
Representing the partnership with SAR, the president of the society, Dr. Claudia Cejas, was present and expressed the importance of this union in an essential event for the specialty and took the opportunity to invite everyone to the Argentine Congress of Diagnostic Imaging (CADI 2024), in Buenos Aires, between September 26 and 28, 2025: “We are waiting for you in our home, which is your home too”.
Dr. Vasco Galves, FAARDIT president, also welcomed those present and spoke about the relevance of the partnership between the radiology societies of Brazil and Argentina during JPR 2025, highlighting the value of scientific and cultural integration between the countries. “May this fraternal path continue for generations to come,” he said.
Continuing the ceremony, Dr. Caserta invited the Secretary of Health of the State of São Paulo, and also radiologist, Dr. Eleuses Paiva to share a few words.
Dr. Eleuses spoke about his honor in being a doctor, specifically a radiologist in the field of nuclear medicine, and how important he thinks events like JPR are, where everyone has the opportunity to exchange valuable knowledge and also reinforce the responsibility that each doctor – and even society – has in relation to medicine in our country. Tribute session is characterized by emotion and recognition
The traditional SPR honorary members session was led by Dr. Caserta. The recognition began with the Argentine friends who represent this JPR 2025 theme: “Brazil and Argentina – Celebrating friendship and tradition in Radiology”. The first honoree, Dr. Alejandro Rolón, received the tribute from Dr. Antônio José da Rocha, SPR Scientific Director.
The second SPR honorary member to be honored was Dr. Claudio Bonini, who received the honor from Dr. Renato Adam Mendonça, SPR Director of Institutional Relations.
Then, it was Dr. Daniel Mysler’s turn, the third honoree, to receive the tribute from Dr. Renato Hoffmann Nunes, SPR Second Treasurer.
The session was also marked by a tribute to Dr. José Venâncio, led by Dr. Caserta himself.
Terminando as homenagens aos Membros Honorários, foi a vez da homenagem de Patrono e Presidente de Honra da 55ª Jornada Paulista de Radiologia.
Finishing the tributes to the Honorary Members, it was time for the tribute of JPR Patron and Honorary President.
The Patron title is given to a professional who stands out for their good knowledge of the specialty, ethical professional practice and dedication to the SPR. “The Patron of this JPR 2025 not only fits all the predicates of the position, but is a friend of all of us, Dr. Tufik Bauab Junior,” said Dr. Caserta when announcing this year’s honoree.
Dr. Douglas Racy, second secretary and SPR president-elect, was the one who delivered the tribute. Visibly moved and happy, Dr. Tufik thanked his two families: his biological family (wife, children and grandchildren) and his medical friends from all over the world who crossed paths with him on his journey. For him, these two families gave meaning to his life. Check out his full acceptance speech!
The last tribute of the session, delivered by Dr. Cesar Higa Nomura, SPR President of the Advisory Board, was that of Honorary President of JPR 2025, granted to Dr. Mauro Brandão da Costa, who faced one of the most challenging moments during his presidency. “Within this challenge, with great wisdom, humility and a sense of collectivity, he presided over the SPR during the Covid-19 pandemic, attentive to the needs of society, but without ever forgetting the human side”, said Dr. Caserta.
Dr. Brandão, surprised by the invitation, received the tribute with great honor. He thanked his family, the great teachers who taught him about radiology and his professors at SPR, who always share their knowledge at important events in society. Check out Dr. Mauro’s moment of gratitude.
To close the session, Dr. Caserta paid tribute to a esteemed colleague who recently passed away, Dr. Santiago Rossi. An Argentinean, Dr. Santiago often graced SPR events, and this was a symbolic expression of appreciation for his contribution to radiology.
Environmental awareness in radiology: a new era commitment
“Sustainability in Radiology and the New Generation of Radiologists”: this was the theme Dr. Carlo Catalano brought to his lecture during the opening, having Braccos’ support.
Dr. Catalano argued radiologists should take an active role in the search for more sustainable practices. Radiology consumes large amounts of energy and still generates significant waste, but it also has numerous opportunities for improvement.
Measures such as reducing unnecessary exams with the support of clinical tools, using artificial intelligence, turning off equipment outside of hours of use and opting for reusable materials are practical examples with great potential for impact. In addition, simple actions such as efficient scheduling of exams and encouraging remote work can also contribute to a more sustainable system.
He shared the role of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), which has been developing some initiatives focused on sustainability, reinforcing the importance of collaboration between professionals and institutions. He also highlighted the new generation of radiologists is especially prepared to lead this transformation and drive changes within and outside their departments.
Finally, he highlighted it is essential to invest in education, training and exchange of experiences to build a fairer, more resilient future with less environmental impact in the health area.
